AHS Complaint - Left holding the bag - gas hot water heater

gas hot water heater - Complaint
Review by aocmartin14 on 2011-11-03
PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA -- On October the 26th was a Wednesday. We were promised service on our water heater. So ( ahs) sent out Rod plumbing and Heating. Rod had 2 service men come to my house. One had a problem removing the thermocouple so while he was trying Rod called him. He told Rod he was trying to remove the thermocouple and Rod told him that all Whirlpool waterheaters come with a left handed screw thermocouple. So now we have to wait for a part. We also paid Rod the money because he led us to believe he was going to finish the job. Well today is the 3rd day of November and we are still without hot water. And the kicker is. On the 1st. day of November I called Whirlpool and they told me that my Whirlpool was a newer model and didn't need a lefthanded thermocouple and could use any thermocouple. So when we call( AHS) TONIGHT 11/03/11 at around 9:25 pm and spoke to John who said he was a supervisor and that Rod had refused to do the job.
Remember it was Rod at the beginning who made the wrong call. I hope there is someone out there who understands this. He refuses the job, hey guess what I don't want old Rod to ever enter my home again. So from, October the 28th a Wednesday until November the 3rd. My family and I have been without hot water. Because let's face it the guy who was trying to remove the thermocoule wasn't even there 5 minutes. It could have been done on that day. But old Rod said that all Whirlpools use a lefthanded thermocouple. Hey isn't he supposed to be a plumber? Shouldn't he have known that Whirlpool had updated that model. In fact all models from 2006.

The problem is that you've already paid this Rod Plumbing and Heating. If they are refusing to finish the job, get them to place it in writing. Without proof they are the ones refusing to finish the job, they can state they were willing to return and finish as discussed initially. As such, you wouldn't be entitled to a refund.

first off, get rid of AHS.

to add another commit you can get a thermocoupler at the hardware store. i had a friend of mine put it on my water heater when my went out. and they usually costs around 10 dollars

Um, did you expect him to work on the weekend? Because the 28th of October was a Friday.

The lucky part of this story is that the left-handed thermocouples were used on a bad design that repeatedly failed, as I recall. A real dud. You wouldn't want want of that model.

My honest guess is that these guys have repaired so many of the older, poorly designed ones that they expect every water heater to be LH threads. To me, the thermocouple should be stamped "LH" if it is, since that is unusual. There is no mechanical reason to make the threads LH, other than to distinguish that thermocouple from others.

I can see why they would not want to force getting it out, but I agree that they should have been experienced enough to know which thread it is.

The thing that looks most odd to me is that old Rod refused to do the job. Was there a conflict with Rod?
