Guardsman, a unit of Valspar Complaint - Guardsman's Furniture Protection Plans are a despicable FRAUD!
GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN -- Guardsman is a unit of Valspar. Their furniture protection plans are sold at furniture stores throughout the USA. Don't waste your money. They are running a scam. They will take your money but not honor any claim you submit. In denying your claim they will refer to their terms and conditions, fine print that uses cleverly constructed limitations and restrictions that render the insurance you paid for useless.
My Guardian Elite Plan was a 5 year protection plan covering every imaginable problem. 2.5 years after my purchase I filed a claim on my leather recliner, the reclining mechanism of which broke. Guardsman sent me a form with instructions to complete the form and return it within 10 days with proof of purchase. I couldn't readily find my proof of purchase until a month or so later. When I did find it I returned the form and the proof of purchase. Within 3 days I got a letter saying my claim was ineligible because I didn't return the documentation within 10 days. I explained that it was difficult for me to find my proof of purchase (receipt) and appealed to them to reconsider. They refused.
I went on the Internet and found many, many, many people whose claims with Guardsman met a similar fate.
This is not a company in the American tradition. They do not try to help you. On the contrary, they use their questionable legalese and fine print to avoid honoring legitimate claims.
Why should my failure to return a form within 10 days be forever fatal to my claim. Had I known this I would have simply delayed filing the claim until I had my proof of purchase in hand.
This is the kind of un-American heavy handed and unfair treatment of hard working consumers that makes events like Occupy Wall Street necessary.
We all need to drive businesses like Guardsman, a unit of Valspar, out of business not not patronizing them or buying their products.
Next time you go out to buy furniture and the sales person invites you to buy a Guardsman Elite Furniture Protection Plan politely decline unless you want to be ripped off.
