Wal-Mart Complaint - Don't Trust the Availability Online
DALLAS, TEXAS -- I was doing a bit of at home Christmas shopping this weekend and found a couple great deals for toys at Walmart.com. I noticed they had the free "pick up" service that allows you to pay for you to have the items set aside and pre-pay items, and you have 7 days to pick it up at your designated store.
The items are shown "in stock" or "out of stock" by store, so I picked the store near my house because they had all the items available. The site explained that I would get a text message within 4 hours letting me know that the items were set aside and I could pick them up... Unfortunately, it took 4 times as long to send me an email that the order was cancelled and my money refunded because the items were out of stock.
Since yesterday was Black Friday, I gave them the benefit of the doubt and did the same process at another store that indicated the items were available. Within an hour I got a text saying my order was cancelled, and my money was refunded. A picked a third store, and got the exact same results.
I totally appreciate that no inventory system will be perfect as items can be gone from the shelf but still in the store in someone's shopping cart or hidden in the wrong place. However, all three stores are still showing availability online, even though none of them have any in stock according the the messages from all three stores.
Luckily for me I ended up not spending a dime on this service because every single thing I wanted turned out to be out of stock, but I wonder how many people get scammed into making larger purchases with more items because these popular products are "in stock", only to find out that they are not and have not been for some time.
