Ann Taylor Loft Complaint - Promotional Misrepresentation - Discount not allowed.

Discount not allowed. - Complaint
Review by jmachamer547 on 2011-12-04
CANTON, OHIO -- On black Friday, my 28 year old daughter and I purchased $200 of clothes at Ann Taylor Loft. We were impressed with the sale that was going on (50% off) and we also received discount cards to be used a week later for $25 off for every $50 spent. I went back when the discount period was in effect to purchase a dress that my daughter tried on, but we hadn't purchased at our last visit. I was so excited to get the dress with the discount card. Imagine my surprise when the clerk told me that the discount couldn't be used because the dress was on sale and the discount was not applicable on sale items. I did not purchase the dress because I was so upset at being misled. The clerk should have clarified that information when we received the cards. Shame on Ann Taylor Loft for conducting a promotion that is not a promotion. During these tough economic times when stores are competing for the consumer's dollars Ann Taylor needs to be more aware. I'm looking for a new clothing store that doesn't mislead the customer.

That is fairly common in most stores. Discounts are not generally given on items that are already on sale.

Was there any fine print that stipulated that?

$25 off every $50 spent is a HUGE discount. I'm not surprised that it can't be combined with another discount such as a sale. In these difficult economic times and people not spending as much, it is critical for retailers not to actually lose money on a transaction.

Assuming that there was no advertisement that these cards could be used on everything, how were you were misled?

Kohl's must be doing something right. Their coupons and Kohl's Cash have no restrictions. And as far as I know, they're not losing money. Both can be used on anything in-store and online, including sale/clearance items.

Nothing misleading here. A review of the Ann Taylor website shows that on these type of discount cards, it can be used on full price merchandise. My assumption anyway would normally be that a second discount will not apply to merchandies already discounted, unless it clearly says so.
