National Car Rental Informative - "Buyer beware" of National's gas option
SEATTLE, WASHINGTON -- "Buyer beware" of National's gas option
"Buyer beware" follow-up regarding my transaction with National Car Rental... When the National agent explained the "convenience" gas option to me ($3.56 per gallon), I requested clarification, asking something like "But I'll be charged only for the gas I'll actually use... Right?" To which he responded, "Right." Well, actually: wrong. The 2-page fine-print agreement (which I signed once and initialed in at least half a dozen more places) actually states that the customer agrees to pay for a full tank of gas (tank capacity: 17.5 gallons) - regardless of how much is actually used. But even the quoted price of $3.56 per gallon was misleading; it apparently did not include tax -- because they charged me at $4.00 per gallon! (Going rate was about $3.50 after taxes at most gas stations in the area.) Very few, I think, would go for this kind of "convenience" if this option was properly explained.
They agreed to refund a reasonable amount, but only after I complained. Main purpose in sharing this is just a heads up. Don't ever agree to any extras from National without a thorough investigation.
