QVC Complaint - 14kt gold or fake?

Complaint
Review by julia7ramirez52 on 2011-12-10
I purchased a 24" 14kt. GOLD rope necklace a couple weeks ago from QVC during one of their "gold" programs. I purchased it on 3 or 4 easy payments of $60 something dollars per month.

When I opened the package and pulled out the chain...I WAS SHOCKED!!! The thing looks like Sterling Silver...IN NO WAY 14KT GOLD!!!! I have several 10kt and 14kt gold jewelry...and it is a buttery yellow. I understand and know the higher up in KT you go, the more buttery yellow it is, and Visa versa the LESS gold kt to you.

WHAT THE HECK QVC?!?!?

Sounds like you received a white gold necklace.

Venice has a good point - is it white gold?

Venice does make a good point - white gold is more like Imperial margarine than butter.

Let's do the math on this. You purchased a 24" 14kt. gold rope necklace. You have four payments at $60.00 a month. That's a total of $240.00. Gold is now selling for about $1700.00 an ounce. Do you really believe that you purchased 24" of solid 14kt. gold for $240.00? Dream on.

Listen to Venice. You purchased white gold that really has no value. QVC is slick marketing. They give the illusion that what they are selling is the real thing. In reality you just got ripped off. Do not buy from these people, it's a scam. Send it back and demand a refund. A valuable lesson learned.

Ok4now, it's possible that the OP bought a 14kt gold rope necklace at that price. It depends on the weight. I wish she had posted the item number so we could look at it.

White gold has the same gold content as yellow gold. It just contains a different alloy, usually nickle, to give it the silvery color. White gold was sometimes more expensive than yellow because it was harder to find. Now that it's being mass produced, the prices are about the same.

I've seen a few reviews here about the authenticity of QVC's gold. I would not have guessed in a million years that QVC sold anything but the real thing. But those reviews were very convincing. In this case, I really think the OP received white gold by mistake. QVC's rope chains usually come in all three colors, yellow, white and rose.

Excellent point Venice. As you correctly said it depends on the weight. White, yellow or rose gold the OP only paid $240.00 for 24 inches. This is two feet of rope chain, that's huge. As I commented gold is $1700 an ounce. What percentage of gold is in this for $240.00? Very little. If the OP purchased 24 inches of solid 14kt gold the price would be well over $10K. QVC mislead the customer to make a sale.

I checked QVC's website, and they have several 14kt gold 24" rope chains at around $200.00. They are hollow and the gram weight is nil. They're nothing like the solid, weighty chain you're thinking of. They are more like the chains that come with pendants. Here's one in white gold:

could be white gold. also, if it is stamped 14kt, then is has to be real gold and not an overlay.

Good info Venice. I checked out the link at what QVC is selling is a fashion "look at me" rope chain. Technically it's not false advertising because it does contain gold. For that price they have to be hollow with no gram weight. QVC does not disclose this.

Back in the 1980's when gold was cheap ($300 an ounce) the style everybody wore was the heavy solid robe chains, bracelets and medallions. I had a big collection of this but haven't worn it in years. It was collecting dust so I just sold it at a 500% profit. I wish my IRA and Stock Portfolio had this rate of return!!
