Long John Silver's Restaurants Informative - Another one joins the french fry revolution!

Review by Justice-4-All on 2011-12-23
I decided to eat Long John Silver's for lunch today. I ordered my usual, the #8, plus add a piece of chicken. It basically consists of 3-pieces of chicken, two hushpuppies, and fries. Well, low and behold, Long John Silver's has decided to join the recent fry craze and completely changed their trademark fries. They used to have the long and skinny fries like McDonald's currently have, and like the ones that Burger King "used" to carry. They have switched to the shorter and wider version of potato cut fries, similar to the ones that Wendy's and Lotaburger serve.

For me personally, this is a good thing, since I favor the new fries. I never really cared for the old ones. My son is the exact opposite, as he seems to like the old ones better. To each their own I suppose.

I just thought I'd bring this to everyone's attention, since there has been quite a few reviews about french fries lately. It's nice to know what you're getting yourselves into before ordering...especially since I don't recall the menu boards reflecting this change in style.

Surely it cannot be a change for health reasons? Long John's is infamous for their greasy food preparation methods. There has to be another reason the change in the style of fries is becoming so popular. I wonder what potato propaganda is being perpetuated?

Their fries always tasted fishy to me. They fry them in the same oil as the fish. Do they still taste fishy?

Not to me. They seem less greasy as well. That could be entirely my imagination though. I just know I prefer the new switchover. Mmmmmmmm!

I favor the new fries, I don't care what Consumer Reports says. Both the thicker cut for the fries plus the new coating make the fries crisper and they hold the heat longer. Julienne fries cool off way too fast. It may be just me, but I feel when I bite into a thicker fry there is something in my mouth, instead of having to bunch up several of the skinny fries. As with most things, technology has made an improvement.

Starlord> Excellent assessment.

If the fries taste fishy, shorty, it means the oil needs to be changed badly. Fresh oil in the Fryolaters does not transfer tastes, and no restaurant I know of has dedicated frypots for different foods. One of the cable channels just had an episode about fried foods, and the necessity for fresh oil was discussed. We have a Presto fry pot, and fresh oil will cook anything we put in it without mingling flavors, and we just love fish and chips.

I thought I knew what I'd be in for if I went to LJS. I was last there in 1990.

Now I know what kind of fries I'll find if I decide to return. Good review.
