Google Complaint - Serious Defect In Google Spell Checker

Complaint
Review by pnickoletti76 on 2011-12-27
HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT -- This is not complicated. The Google search engine is clearly biased toward certain spellings of given and surnames. Thus, it blocks searches to names that involve variations -- it's as if people with any variations in the spelling of their names DO NOT EXIST. This is an entirely predictable defect and more than an inaccuracy or an error; in the age of online social networking, it's unethical (e.g., is Google receiving money to give some names access and by default, blocking other names?).

Not sure what spell checker you are referring to? The one in Gmail or Google Doc's? You can add your own words to the dictionary. Most all software gets their dictionaries from the same sources. The basic dictionaries come with basic names, variations need to be added by the user.

Send Google a message about the issue. Google is always in "beta" with everything, trying to perfect what they build. They are very receptive to suggestions. No, I don't work for Google but we use a lot of their development tools and know a little about how they think and operate.

Google attempts to help its customers by auto-correcting misspelled terms. For example, if I search "amason", it will assume I meant Amazon... Google will alert you when this has happened by saying something like "Showing results for amazon. Search instead for amason"

Does your business have an unusual name? You might want to contact Google to alert them of the fact so regional searches will show the correct spelling.
