AAA Complaint - AAA Steals money from a minor stranded in Hempstead
ISLIP TERRACE, NEW YORK -- So at 3:30 am on a dark street in Hempstead with a flat tire and no good spare my 18 year old nephew calls AAA for help. After all that is why he has the card. A towing company, I believe Statewide was sent from AAA to help. If you call stealing money from him help, I guess they did. The tow guy told him that he couldn't tow him to a AAA shop because it was 8 miles away and he would have to pay for the tow after 3 miles in cash. The tow guy said for $21 he could tow him somewhere local and that they would give him a discount on the tire. The car was towed and the next day the tire was replaced for the tune of $100. The old tire was requested but not given to him. Being 18, stranded and little money with no means of getting anymore at 3:30 in the morning he did what the AAA tow told him to do. The kicker is, I called AAA today. There is NO CHARGE for a tow to a AAA shop and they have no idea why the tow guy charged him anything but it is between me and the towing company. AAA is washing their hands of the shakedown even though they were the ones that called the towing company. The women I spoke to on the phone, one was the supervisor- ha! were no help at all in fact they were very indifferent to the whole thing. When I asked for a higher up they said it was 12 am and there was no one there! Amazing a huge company and all I had was two twits to speak to. The disappointment of this whole ordeal will make me voice my opinion to anyone that will listen. The kid was 18! I ended the call with I hope that you are never stuck in Hempstead at 3:30 am!
