VICKSBURG, MISSISSIPPI -- I did not find out that I was overcharged for the car that I bought until I had signed the contract. I tried to leave the car at the dealership, but I was told by the manager that he had taken someone to court and won who wanted to go back on a contract.

You can break some car sales contracts within 3 days, if a I recall correctly. May vary by state.

The best way to avoid being overcharged is known ahead of time how much the dealer paid.

Trmn8r, I have never thought of that of how much the dealer paid. How do you find out how much they paid?

But that is how you do it. A fair price gives the dealer a fair profit.

Assuming you buy a car not on the lot that the dealer isn't financing, how much profit do you think the dealer is entitled to for spending a few hours writing the deal and prepping the car? $400?

I can't remember where I got the dealer's cost - but that info is out there. There are variables like advertising and holdback. It's been 10 years since I bought one new...
