DETROIT, MICHIGAN -- I own a 2004 Z71 Silverado (VIN#2GCEK13T641404698) with only 80,000 miles and found the heads are cracked around the mounting bolts losing antifreeze (No, the engine never overheated due to this failure.) I religiously followed all my fluid changes and taken extremely good care of this vehicle.

I feel the quality and workmanship of this engine lacks credibility and will not buy another GM product again with only being stuck with this one since it will probably cost me well over 2000.00 to repair. My recommendation is to make vehicles more reliable not unreliable.

After receiving a very insulting offer for aid in the repair I would have to say that it was very insulting. Not that it is any concern of yours or the company, I will never plan on buying a General Motors product again. I hope the GM company is proud they build such an un-reliable product which as an result will prompt me to go with Dodge or Chrysler on my next 2 purchases because I have one that has 170,000 miles on it and still running strong. In addition to this complaint I am planning on selling my truck after it is repaired because I am not totally confident it will make it to 85000!!!

Kind of pathetic that a multi-million dollar company would not fully or mostly help out a average salaried customer on something that is clearly a defect on their behalf. I guess they would rather see me spend my 30-40,000 on something other than a GM Product.

Sorry to hear that you had such an expensive problem with a GM product. Before I go any further advertising your VIN is like posting your S.S. number. Don't do it. The VIN can easily be run to get your name and address personally identifying you. From there a scammer could find additional information about you possibly leading to I.D. theft. I would delete this immediately.

Possibly other owners have had the same problem leading to the repair being done out of warranty. GM won't advertise this so you have to complain loudly and they may offer you a deal. Try this first before you shell out almost $3K.

Chrysler is rated about at the bottom for quality and customer happiness so I'm not sure your making a move for the better. An 8 yr old car with 80K is so out of warranty if GM offered you any help I think thats a good thing.

Has there ever been any work done on the engine? Cracking around those boplts usually indicates they have not been properly torqued, and I know they leave the factory with the torque set correctly, then they are checked by themechanics at the dealer as part of the Dealer Set-Up. In an eight-year old vehicle, I can't believe that no one ever did anything to the engine.

Look at GM bulletin #06-06-01-019B, which discusses gradual leaking of coolant in engines with cylinder heads manufactured by Castech. That might provide some information as to the problem you are having.
