On Star - Worst product I have EVER purchased
NATIONAL, MASSACHUSETTS -- Where do I begin? This product and service are incredibly inept and dangerous! My 6 yr old son and I were driving across country in our 2005 Honda Odyssey Touring Van. I had seen On Star on Celebrity Apprentice and the concept of having directions and accident protection in places I didn’t know was appealing, so I had it installed before the trip. I’ll highlight some lowlights to give you an exact idea of what happened…
We were travelling from Washington State to Massachusetts. When we got to Utah I had no idea the best route to take. On Star has a feature where you call them and they send directions right to your car. Sounds excellent, but…
On Star set me back at least an hour as they told me three times to go 89S, not 15S-the direction they sent to my vehicle (and the route I had mapped before I left). They specifically told me not once or twice but three times to ignore the directions they had sent and follow what they were saying, to take 89S. I did as they said. 15S would have taken me on a major highway around the city, instead, I followed what On Star suggested (89S) and hit EVERY single traffic light in Salt Lake City! This delayed me at least an hour in travel time.
Oct. 30, 2011…My six year old son got car sick and threw up all over himself and the car. I called On Star and asked where the nearest restroom was, ANY restroom. On Star told me the nearest restroom in any capacity (i. e., gas station, restaurant, etc…) was 34 miles away. I had seen a billboard less than a mile ago for a Stuckey’s 26 miles ahead. We saw and stopped at a gas station and used their restroom less than half a mile away from us when we called On Star.
Oct. 31, 2011…I called On Star and asked where the nearest Redbox was located. Was told nothing for another 62 miles. Less than a mile later I saw a Walmart from the road and stopped at the Redbox there. I believe this Redbox was in Weatherford, TX.
On Star is so annoying at this point I don’t want it on anymore. Sometimes the orange triangle and red strip lights flash, sometimes it doesn’t. When I called On Star about this problem, they want me to stop at an authorized dealer and have it checked out. I have a 6 yr old and I’m travelling across the country…I don’t have half a day or an entire day to check out On Star deficiencies! They offer me four months of free subscription services but why would I want four more months of this crappy service?!
Also today (Oct. 31) I called On Star to ask how much it cost to get into Graceland in Memphis, TN, I was told “I don’t know”. I replied, “Could you find out for me please”? I was told she would look up a couple of phone numbers for me.
Unbelievable! Called On Star Nov. 1, 2011. Was travelling on 66E en route to Washington, DC at exit 18 (passing it). On Star told me there were many motels at exit 6. When I passed exit 28 and noticed all the exits were going up in number, I called On Star back. They apologized and wanted me to take Hwy 21, then 25, going 15-20 miles off of Hwy 66E. I told them never mind. I found FIVE motels off of exit 47 simply by reading signs on the Highway.
Nov. 2, 2011 On Star almost got me shot or arrested today. Went to the White House and twice was told by On Star to take a left on E Street. So I did…police yelled at me and told me On Star is wrong…get the f%$& out of there! This service is good less than 5% of the time.
Nov. 3, 2011…Called On Star and told them I’d like to avoid toll roads from DC to Massachusetts. Following their directions, I ended up on NJ Turnpike, not knowing which of two choices of roads to take. Stopped on side of road, totally frustrated, will NOT be asking On Star anything further except for my money back!
These are just a few of the things that went wrong with On Star. I urge you to do yourself a favor…just use a map or get AAA. I guarantee it will save you time, money and heeps of stress. On Star is a completely inept service. You’ve been warned.
