CHICAGO, ILLINOIS -- I used the online payment system promoted by the Treasurer's office to pay my property taxes. The online form must have cut off a digit of my account so the payment was not submitted properly. The cook county treasurer's office assessed a $25 NSF fee for my 'returned' payment. I have reviewed the payment flow, and the only case in which I agreed to pay a $25 charge is an NSF, and my attempted payment was clearly not an NSF.

The responses to my customer service inquiries have been unsatisfactory and demonstrate a lack of understanding of my original request. I clearly requested the removal of the assessed $25 NSF charge, and this was ignored. Instead I got some boilerplate contractual speak which still does not justify the charge.

Additionally, the office's web based web based 'one-way' communication system is
frustrating and difficult to use. I have also called into the office twice to resolve this issue, and the person who I spoke with was courteous but completely unhelpful. They also discouraged me from coming into the office to resolve the issue in person because of a multi-hour wait. I even requested a time of day that is less busy, and the person I was speaking to said there are none.
