ORLANDO, FLORIDA -- I had changed banks and there was an error in the transfor so the payment was rejected by Progress Energy. I did not receive any notice. The power was shut down. Nobody called or knocked on the door. 5 hours later the power was restored. I have been penalized with a $40 turn on charge, plus a $790 new deposit. The customer service people were nasty and threatened to turn my power off.

You were charged a $40 fee, not $790.

Requiring a deposit for certain customers deemed to be a risk isn't uncommon with utilities. Unfortunately you may be considered a risk due to this incident. Electronic payments are wonderful until a change is needed due to lead times in notifying the clearing house that processes batch payments - I watch scrupulously during the switchover to make sure one and only one payment is made.

I seem to recall that when I had my very first phone there was a deposit required. Hopefully the utility will eliminate the requirement after a short period of time.

Call the bank. This was a banking error. I have had my bank (Bank of America) do it before. I showed that what had happened was their fault and they paid off the bill and any other fees associated with the bill.

790 dollar deposit? With my electricity, I don't have to pay any deposit. Wow, hope you find a way to prove the bank is at fault.

I recall utility companies charge about 2 months utility usage for a deposit.

Wow, I don't know of anyone who spends almost $400/mo on electricity.

Clutzy, our electric bill in the summers here in Phoenix can reach over $500 a month. In the winters, we pay around $60-80 a month
