Lifelock - Thanks a LOT

Review by renewhite1980 on 2012-03-17
I just saw a LifeLock advertisement that shows a diner waitress copying a customers credit card #..basically implying that she's going to use it...or "steal his identity"...I'm a waitress...and I just want to say first: I would NEVER DO SOMETHING LIKE THAT...And second: that commercial makes hard working waitresses look scandalous! I work hard for my money & don't anyone else's money other than my own!!

So thanks for making us "hard working waitresses" look like criminals!!

Unfortunately, what the ad portrays is factual. Any place where the service provider ( including a waitress) walks away with your credit card is an opportunity for theft.

There are many proven cases where this is exactly what happened. That does not mean all waitresses do it.

very helpful review!!

not ALL service staff is a thief.

While you may not do something like that, there are many who would. Unfortunately, there's no foolproof way to know intuitively who is honest and who is not. Therefore an abundance of caution must be exercised at all times. Stinks how the misdeeds of a few ruin it for everyone, huh?

Just about any commercial can offend someone or some group. I can see why this commercial is offensive to you. You have my sympathy. And thank you for not complaining about the Hardees commercial.

clutzycook,I disagree with your post because you stated "many who would". While this is indeed a problem it is caused by very few. "Many" is a gross exageration

Ok, "many" was the wrong word. The point I was trying to make was that while the OP would not do that, some certainly would. Which is why products such as LifeLock exist. I worked in bedside patient care for 5 years. Whenever we gave a narcotic medication and had some left over, we had to "waste" the leftovers with another nurse co-signing it. Why? Because several nurses have been known to take that leftover medication themselves or even sell it on the street. I certainly would never do that. I could barely make it through my shift sober, never mind high. But I was also never offended by having to have a witness to my wasting either.

I can understand the OP's dislike for the commercial in question. She should realize that there are waitresses who would steal credit card info. There is a restaurant in Casa Grande, AZ that has over 350 complaints of theft of credit card information. I was a deputy sheriff in Arizona, and I saw a number of dramas on TV that showed corrupt cops. Do you think I went off on a tear because they showed an actor playing a dirty cop? No, because it did not apply to me. The thing that upset me is that some people see stuff like that on a TV show, and think it happens much, nuch more than it really does. Chill out is the best advice I can give.

understand than in most of the world the server brings a machine to the customer not the server taking the clients cc away and out of view. The US is behind most of the world in how they treat cc transactions. Its a very common way to steal cc #'s as are fake 'scanners' at gas stations and even banks.

Wow, talk about profiling!
Posted by JISCal2 on 2012-03-17:
It does seem like profiling but not all are honest. At a fast food joint I made the mistake of using my debit card instead of a credit card. I was in the drive thru (big mistake) The guy took my card and turned his back to me. I could see that he whipped his cell phone out. I couldn't tell what he was doing but as soon as I got my food I pulled around and reported the card stolen. I went inside and spoke to the manager. He asked for the employees cell phone, which he handed over. He must have had speedy fingers because he had texted my card number and several others to himself. NOT cool!

The major problems with commercials like this is that are designed to incite fear in people so they can sell their product to reduce your fear. They should be made to post a disclaimer stating that is not typical with the commercials ( problem is they might in print to small to read and gone before you have time to read it) Army Military Police background, NSA security training, Security officer for an Intelligence Battalion and 10 years of doing background investigations. I have a little more experience than the majority of people you meet on the street, cut the waitress some slack she has a right to be angry about how they portrayed the profession.
