Amana - Glass on oven door spontaneously shattered--twice!

Complaint

VERNON, NEW JERSEY -- We bought an Amana smooth-top stove in 2004 and were quite happy with it for a good six years. But then one morning, while still in bed, I heard a nerve-rattling sound coming from my kitchen. I went downstairs to see, amazingly, that the outer glass on my oven door had shattered. The oven was not hot at the time (as I said it was early in the morning and the oven had last been used the evening before). Kids were sleeping, not a mouse was stirring. The glass just shattered and fell to the floor, of its own accord. Fun job to clean up. After buying a new door and replacing it, things were good for about another year and a half. Then it happened again! The glass just shattered and fell to the floor as though it had been hit with a baseball bat. Luckily our young kids were not around, and the glass does not explode out but rather cascades down, but still! It's annoying. And now we don't feel like spending another $100 for a door, so it's sitting there, functional but extremely ugly. I figure I may just spend another few hundred bucks and get a whole new oven--but not an Amana.

Some people thinks it's acceptable for glass oven doors to shatter, but I am not one of them. And it's not just Amana. There are similar complaints about other manufacturers, too. If these companies can't make a glass door that doesn't randomly shatter, they should stop making glass oven doors.

Wow! Not ok! I think they should replace the glass most definitely. I've had a pyrex shatter in the oven, not as bad but I know how sucky it is!

Completely unacceptable!

After seeing all the complaints on the internet about Pyrex shattering, I stopped using it. I bought some Anchor Hocking glassware, but I'm leery about using that, too. I don't like pots with glass lids for the same reason, but it's almost impossible to find stainless steel lids anymore.

there is a lot of mis-information on exploding pyrex.

Care to elaborate, madconsumer?

I read many horror stores from actual users that I have no reason to doubt. I once dropped a Pyrex bowl and couldn't believe what happened. It broke into a fine sand-like material that flew everywhere. It was almost impossible to clean up. Pyrex has been in my family for years, but it's not worth the risk.

Evidently a company named World Kitchen makes Pyrex out of soda glass, and this version tends to shatter and has a blueish cast.

The original Pyrex is made from borosilicate, and is clear and doesn't shatter spontaneously.

Ahhh, I didn't realize Pryex was now being made by a different company. I don't know which company made the bowl that I broke, but it was about 20 years old and didn't have a bluish tint. I have never seen glass break like that before. That was when I started to wonder what exactly Pyrex was made of.

What misinformation on exploding pyrex? Mine exploded. I didn't take it out and put it on a cold counter, I didn't cook with it if it had scratches or nicks. It just EXPLODED inside the oven while cooking. Oh and it ruined my oven.

I'm afraid to cook with any glass cookware now but I have heard the vintage stuff is much better!

Imagine putting Pyrex on a Martha Stewart exploding glass top table?!!.. KABOOM!

I have no idea what misinformation madconsumer is referring to. Maybe s/he'll come back and let us know.

Yeah... after 7 years of using the oven they MUST have done something to make the door shatter. Why do people always want to blame the consumer?

Kahula35, the same thing happened again with a new door that was only 18 months old. That definitely indicates a problem.

There are other complaints here about glass doors that shattered for no apparent reason, but I don't remember the brands. I've never had it happen to me, but I am seriously considering a solid door with a small window on my next stove. Other than looking nice, the glass serves no purpose. You can't even see through it.
