U-Haul Informative - Receiving Pre-Lien Notices and Charges for Property Destroyed by Katrina
KENNER, LOUISIANA -- After Hurrican Katrina hit I found a picture of my U-Haul storage building in Kenner, Louisiana, on the internet. I live in Houston but with GoogleEarth and NOAA satellite overlays of Katrina damage I could see the 2x4s outlining my 8x10 ft unit, and what was left of the building. I called the U-Haul office and they said it wasn't safe to enter the building now, and they would let me know when I could come back to claim my property. Meanwhile I kept receiving late payment notices and Pre-Lien notices with additional charges. I called to complain and was told to just ignore these letters as they are generated by A Computer, and I won't be charged for anything. I asked who was running the business? I was told it was being run in Phoenix. I called U-Haul Customer Service to complain and was transfered to a special U-Haul Katrina Help Line where I could listen to a voice recording guiding me to FEMA, the Red Cross, etc. I called U-Haul customer Service again and asked for the Collections Department. After explaining the situation I was told each U-Haul office runs its own business, not the Phoenix office, and was transferred to the special U-Haul Katrina Help Line where I could listen to a voice recording guiding me to FEMA, the Red Cross, etc., again. I called U-Haul Collections again and was told by Ted he couldn't help me further. "I wash my hands of this" he said. Seven weeks later I am still receiving late payment and pre-lien notices with additional charges. I can't be the only one!
