CALIFORNIA -- Our submission was mailed Dec. 17th, 2011, for $10 rebate on a humidifier. More than a month or so later, we got a "rejection" for some detail missing - although it wasn't! I threatened to advise the FTC on them - which didn't have a visible effect. Months later, actually yesterday April 20th, 2012, a "gift card" arrived for the $10 plus a buck based on the same submittal that they claimed previously was faulty.

Rebates are a racket. The offerer hopes you'll not bother or at least give up when your submittal is questioned. It is quite close to false advertising. We ought to get it stopped, in favor of options like simply reducing a selling price at the register, or at least being handed this kind of "gift card" agaianst a future purchase right at the register.

They hope you'll take that gift card for $10 and buy something that cost $15.

You are correct - rebates are a racket. But this is true of all of them, not just Walgreens. The company sure is hoping you won't cash them in or make a mistake - this cash comes right out of their profits. There is no additional sale, just a handout of cash.
