LAS VEGAS, NEVADA -- I WAS quoted $499.99 for repair. They did not fix A/C than said it was the compresser. That would be another $600. Which I don't have. NOW I'M OUT $500 AND STILL NO CAR A/C in Las Vegas.

Yep. Had my AC go bad on me last month. Initially we thought we could get away with just replacing the clutch, for about the same price as you. But they (and I had 2 mechanics look at it, too) found the compressor was bad as well. All told, it cost me over $1000 to get it going again. That's not including a week's car rental. I would have waited on it, but it was affecting how my car ran, so it had to get done. I guess, the moral of this story is that sometimes mechanics don't always know exactly what's wrong until they get in there.

Did you get a written estimate of what needed to be done to correct your AC? If you did not it will be much harder to get your $500 dollars back but not impossible. Take them to small claims court. It is their responsibility to diagnose correctly your problem before they start changing parts. In the future get written estimates before you have someone do work on your vehicle. Never diagnose something yourself (unless you're qualified) by saying something like I need a new starter, how much will it cost? The correct way to ask for service on your AC would be >My AC system does not blow cold air, what would it cost to be repaired? Believe me not too many judges in a small claims court will side with the business in these instances. Good luck from a retired mechanic.

I forgot to include something in my previous post. You stated that you do not have $600 so that they can replace the compressor. What makes you think it will end there? If they were wrong the first time they can be wrong again. They could replace the compressor then say it needs a condenser or some other part. Do not fall into this trap. Take your car elsewhere with the money the judge should award you.

Same thing happened to a friend of mine - he informed them "it's not his fault" that they misdiagnosed the problem and they HAVE to make it good. It's NOT your fault they replaced the wrong component - tell them to put the old one back on and replace the bad one.
