We received an very inviting letter from United Airlines on behalf of Energy Plus Holdings last August. Energy Plus Holdings would supply the electric and for signing up with them we would get 7500 United miles. Additionally, for every $1.00 spent with Energy Plus, we would get a mile on our awards credit card. Our bill when we first signed up went from $78.00 to $112.00, to $160.00 and then to $223.00 per month. I called our electric company, ComEd and asked them their rate per KWh, and they said 0.7400. When I called Energy Plus Holdings they said their rate was 0.9400. However, since I was calling and shocked at rate, they said they would talk to a manager about it. They offered a commercial rate of 0.7600 per kWh. My question was why could they just offer me that rate when I first signed up with them? Of course they were ready to wheel and deal once they knew I was cancelling the service. I did cancel with no hesitation. I really hate to be taken advantage of.

Those rates all seem extremely high. Do you mean 74 cents and 94 cents per kWH? I pay around 15.

At any rate, pun intended, it always pays to shop around if you have that choice. Here in PA we just became deregulated and can choose suppliers.
