Gators rental uhauls Complaint - Warning Do Not Rent U-haul -Dishonest

Review by WARNING ABOUT UHAUL on 2005-11-16
PALM BAY, FLORIDA -- I went to Gators Rental in Palm Bay, Florida to rent a U-HAUL to move a short distance. Inside the store, Gators ask if the miles were less than 50, and I told him yes. The miles came out to be 19 miles total when we returned the truck. Gators told me that if the miles were under 50, the amount of cost would only be the rental of $39 plus tax. I said, that is great, so I rented the truck. When we got outside my son who is a mechanic looked at the truck and so the tie-rod was really bad, and he told Gators and showed him just how bad it was. An accident waiting to happen. Then we saw a carter key hanging by a wire, and my son ask, what did that go to and Gators did not know. My son drove the truck, and I told him to really watch it. After we left, my son noticed that the gage had a floater problem. When we returned the truck it was to be sitting on a quarter of a tank. You couldn't tell how much gas was in the junker. One minute it had a the right amount of gas, another minute it didn't. When it came time to pay the bill, the bill had gone from $39 to $169. I told Gators that I was not giving them $169 for an agreed amount of $39. So we went and put more gas in the truck than it had in it, and then Gators ran a totally different contract then the one we signed, and my son notice the difference and said, "this is not our contract!" He got the contract that we had, and Gators charged us $39 plus tax, a $14 dollar insurance fee for four hour use. I told them that we did not sign up for insurance that I had a good policy that would have cover me if I had been in an accident. That didn't matter, it was in the contract they said, and then Gators charged me for the 19 miles that I was told the day before that since it was under 50, there would be no mileage charge. I have filed a compliant with U-haul in which I don't expect anything to come out of, BUT I have also file with the state of Florida, the Department of Agriculture which covers and investigates consumer's compliants against companies. I advise anyone who has a complaint against U-haul to not stop at U-haul headquarters, go to your state offices that handles consumer's complaint. I am sick of getting ripped-off in Florida, and I am fighting back. U-Haul is putting trucks out on the highway that is indangering the person driving it, and the other people on the highway. The reason Gators stiffed us with their high insurance was because they KNEW how UNSAFE their trucks are. They KNOW they are junk, and everyone that we saw had a very bad mechanical problem. Please beware of U-HAUL and do your part to put them out of business. Thank you
