ESCONDIDO, CALIFORNIA -- Dwite at Toyota of Esc. was great I came in with a Eng. light on and he approved 1 hr of testing for free waving the usual $105.00 a Hr service charge and I do Thank you for that.. My service Mgr. Mike [snip] gave me the list of codes that came up during the testing and said the car was safe to drive over the long weekend and he could order the part needed and could install next day. A friend saw the work order and checked under the hood. Well I was 4 quarts of oil low and my coolant was 1 in below Low level. This was never told to me and could have caused me to need a Eng. replacement which I am sure is more than the price of the testing. I do not know much about Cars and have always depended on the HONESTY of my Toyota dealer. Well so much for that. BAD Service Mgr.

Routinely checking fluid levels is something the car owner should either do, or have done regularly. Whoever has that responsibility is at fault for these levels being so low, assuming something didn't happen just recently to cause rapid consumption.

As far as doing work for free, it sounds like Mike deserves credit for giving you an hour of labor for free. A "check engine" light isn't triggered by either low coolant or engine oil, so I don't fault him or his crew for failing to find low fluid levels while checking codes.

That said, there should be a sensor that gives you a low coolant warning on your dash if the level is below Min on your overflow resevoir.

What do service/fault codes have to do with low oil? They weren't checking your oil. Consider yourself lucky that your friend checked.. I don't think the dip stick would have indicated 4qts low.. did your friend also drain it or did they have to add 4qts for it to show full? 4 qts? Does that mean it had 1 left? I bet that took quite-some time to be THAT low... probably something that would've been apparent at your last oil change 3k-5k miles ago? Maybe you skipped your last oil change? Perhaps you should be faulting your oil change place for not adequately tightening your oil drain pan nut. You're lucky you're not buying a new engine as well... the low coolant light would have warned you of impending danger with the coolant. Don't forget to 'bleed' the radiator expansion tank once you fill it.
