Sam's Club - Misleading Letters Sent to My Home

Customer Service or Whoever Sends the Letters - Complaint

GLEN BURNIE, MARYLAND -- I received a letter from Alex Aguila, senior director, credit and financial services (sam's club). The letter stated that if I added an authorized Buyer to my account that I would receive a $10 statement credit. I drove to Sam's Club to add my daughter as an authorized buyer and they told me I couldn't. That I already had one authorized buyer (my husband). The letter never stated that I couldn't do this if I already had an authorized buyer. It simply said add an authorized buyer. When I called customer service they said they couldn't help. VERY misleading letter. Why send me something that then doesn't apply to me when I get to the store? We will be cancelling our membership tomorrow. We have heard many good things about Costco. Maybe they won't try to scam us.

I don't understand how this is a "scam". You were inproperly targeted by the mailing, but the loss to you is one of having wasted your time and gas. There is no gain for Sam's that I can see.

I think the scam is to get people to come into the store. How many people fall for that letter and then because they have already spent the gas just make it a shopping trip?

Even if the letter was sent out by accident, Sams should have honored it. The OP spent money on gas to get there the least they could have done was honor the letter they sent out. Typical walmart corp for not caring about the customer.

Miss Marple - I see your point, and it is possible that a marketing team would resort to such tactics intentionally.

I agree that it's misleading. It reminds me much of cable companies sending out ads to sign up with them and specials that you can get if you sign up with them. They often send it out to everyone, regardless if you have their service or not.

With this Sam's Club offer, it sounded like they sent it to all members, regardless if you already had the additional authorized buyer on the account. Not a scam, just a mass letter that's not filtered based on the customers profile.

This doesn't sound like an issue to cancel your membership over. Prior to this were you happy with the service, product selection and prices?

I previously belonged to Sam's Club and BJ's but after shopping at Costco there is no comparison. Much bigger inventory & selection, rock bottom pricing, excellent fresh organic meats & poultry, huge electronic department, clothing...the list goes on and on. I purchased the executive membership which has many more perks. You get paid to shop with a 2% reward on qualified purchases. This will easily pay for my membership renewal. Check them out, you will not be disappointed.
