Repair water leak in plastic tubing. - Complaint
HOUSTON, TEXAS -- We have used Sears for over 60 years and have had good experiences in the past. We had a small water leak in the plastic tubing that supplies water for dispensing and making ice in our 25' side by side KitchenAid refrigerator.
I went to Sears Repair.com and answered a few questions. The web page said there would be a $65.00 trip charge that would be applied first to the repair charge should we agree to the repair and that the technician would give me an estimate of the total cost should we go ahead with the repair. The web site also indicated the repairman might also grant further discounts during the repair visit. I was NEVER told in advance what the bill might be. He sure didn't tell me I would be charged $183 an hour plus tax.
The technician showed up on time and I showed him exactly where the leak was located. He went out to his truck and got a plastic coupling (could not have cost more than $10.00). He then cut out the area of the leak and screwed the tubing into the coupling. He then tested for leaks and said everything was fine. The total elapsed time was no more than FIFTEEN MINUTES. He then went back to his truck to connect his hand held device to Sears computer and printed out the invoice.
When he came back he immediately started apologizing for the charge and told me there was nothing he could do about it and he had to charge me whatever the computer printed. I then almost dropped my teeth when he told me the charge was over $198.00 ($183 per hour plus tax). This was for one full hour and it was the same amount no matter how long he took for the fix.
I expected to pay about $100 for the fix. I had no indication whatsoever that the hourly rate for a minor repair was $183.00 an hour. My Lexus mechanic doesn't charge half that amount per hour and has significantly more overhead than a pick-up truck.
I was ripped off and this will be absolutely the last time I will ever use Sears for anything. GOODBYE SEARS!!!!!!!!
