Uniworld Cargo Complaint - Horrible Customer Service / False Advertising

Review by msgallagher on 2005-12-02
WEST NEW YORK, NEW JERSEY -- This is another report of a shipping fiasco with Uniworld Cargo. First of, before you read on, don't ever consider this company when you are trying to ship your any goods anywhere.

We chose Uniworld Cargo after doing extensive research on various shipping companies, seeing that they would be a good fit for our small shipment of 100 cubic feet from the US to Switzerland.

We signed a contract for 100 cubic feet, their minimum billable volume. After a local moving company packaged our goods, they estimated the volume at around 70 cubic feet. They picked up the goods at the end of July, 2005.

The goods arrived at the port in the UK in early September 2005. Uniworld Cargo sent us a final bill for 245 cubic feet, charging us for the entire crate instead of just the volume used within the crate - resulting in over two times the costs estimated by Uniworld Cargo.

For 2 months we have been asking for a re-measurement and new bill by way of many e-mails, phone-calls, faxes, talking to a different person everytime (apparently everyone we talked to left the company) without success.

We have yet to receive a corrected bill, let alone any answer whatsoever from Uniworld as to why this re-measurement has taken 2+ months to this date.

Apparently they are using FALSE ADVERTISING by telling potential customers that their minimum billable volume is 100 cubic feet and then charging them for the entire crate volume.

We are now in a legal dispute with the company and the manager, Helen Shany hung up the phone on us, and is refusing to talk to us directly.

MORAL OF THE STORY: DON'T SHIP WITH UNIWORLD CARGO!!!

We also had a horrendous experience with UniWorld Cargo. They were unbelievably rude, charged us $1000 more than the original quote, didn't pack or unpack our shipment, didn't turn up when they were supposed to (which meant they arrived 3 hours before we had to leave to catch our flight out of the country), used an agent in San Francisco, one of who's movers stole $300 from my purse and refused to answer our calls or emails. They have now lost their license with the Federal Maritime Commission which means that anyone that uses them is unprotected. Do not go near this company and also beware of its owners, Ayal and Helen Shany, who are the rudest, nastiest people I've ever had the misfortune to deal with. Here's one of the emails that Helen sent to me (in response to my request for compensation for us being forced to pack our own belongings when they didn't turn up) She basically accuses us of lying about what her husband told us (that they would cover the cost of packing materials) and that it was our choice to still use them (with only a weekend left before our move, we had no choice as no other movers were available at such short notice):
AYAL NEVER CONFIRMED NOR SUGGESTED THAT WE WOULD COVER THE PACKING CHARGES.

THIS IS NOT A TRUE STATEMENT.

YOU WERE PRESSURED FOR TIME. I UNDERSTAND THA
T THE MOVERS DID NOT ARRIVE ON THE SCHEDULED DATE DUE TO A MISTAKE IN SCHEDULING HOWEVER, YOU COULD HAVE OPTED TO USE ANOTHER MOVER AT THAT TIME AND YOU OPTED TO WAIT.

THERE WILL BE NO DEDUCTION IN THE INVOICE.

THANK YOU,

HELEN SHANY

I was screwed royally by this company in 2005 also. I researched various shippers and thought Uni World was the one to use. How WRONG I was.

The arrived on time, packaged my stuff and I moved to England. I received a final bill for twice as much and had no choice to pay it as they were holding my belongings hostage. However the company in England that delivered gave me emails and their measurement of my cargo which was the original cubic ft when shipped.

I was missing a box, stuff had been stolen and damaged in transport. Helen refused to take my calls nor respond to numerous emails. They should be put out of business.

One email between the shipping and receiving company stated that the container contained multiple customers boxes mingled together and not packed well. Absolute disgrace.

BEWARE of this SCAM COMPANY!
