Hutchinson Auto Mall - Unhappy Customer
Battery Replacement - Complaint
MACON, GEORGIA -- I bought a 2007 Cadillac Escalade from Hutchinson Auto Mall a few years ago. Shortly after purchase, I began having issues with the battery. The vehicle was still under warranty so I took it in and they replaced it in 12/09 at no charge...no problems. The battery was a 6 year AcDelco battery with a 30 month free replacement warranty. In January 2012, I began having issues again. I went to a local auto parts store as I live 60 miles away from the dealer. The store tested the battery and alternator and determined the alternator was bad. The vehicle was out of warranty at this time so I bought and replaced the alternator myself. At the end of June 2012, I began having problems again. I took it back to the local parts store and had it checked. They said the alternator was fine..now it's the battery. I then decided since the battery was still within the 6 year window to contact Hutchinson Auto Mall about it. They looked it up in the computer and the representative said she saw where it had been replaced in 2009 under the vehicle warranty. She said the battery was still under warranty and told me to bring it in and they would check and replace for $50 installation fee. I asked if I could just get the battery and install myself. She said no. I decided I would go ahead and pay the fee for install since it was cheaper than buying a new battery. So I took it in on 7/6/12. I arrived at 8:00AM and spoke to another service representative who said the same thing as the 1st representative had said....they would check and replace it for $50 install fee. I was asked to sign a paper that said that I agreed to pay a $95 fee if the work required was not done by them. I went ahead and signed the form since I had been told the battery would be replaced at a cost of $50 for install. At 9:00AM, I was told the tech would have to charge the battery for an hour and test it to determine if it could be replaced by warranty. At 10:45AM, I was told they found the battery to be bad and would replace it. said OK. Around 11:30AM, the tech came around with my vehicle and brought the keys inside. The service representative then came to ma and said, "I'm sorry but I told you wrong. The battery will not be able to be covered under warranty because the battery had been replaced at no charge before under the vehicle warranty and when the vehicle warranty expired, my battery warranty also expired along with it. She said the battery installed would now cost me $228 and some change. I asked to speak with a manager. The manager said that I would have to pay for the new battery because my original battery had been replaced under warranty and my vehicle warranty had expired. Of course I let my frustration be known and he said that is just their policy. I told him I wouldn't have even brought the vehicle to them if I had known that to begin with but 2 different reps said it would be replaced for the $50 install fee. I then asked if they would take it out and put the old battery back in and allow me to purhcase ny own battery elsewhere. He said sure. So then I asked if I would be held to paying the $95 fee since I didn't allow them to perform the service. Thankfully he agreed to allow the fee to be waived. I finally got to leave around noon as an unhappy customer. I later contacted AC Delco and asked about this warranty issue and was told the same thing. I replaced the battery at the local store for $100 and will never do business with HutchinsonAuto Mall again nor will I buy an Ac Delco battery.
