CALIFORNIA -- 2007 Chevy Silverado 32,000 miles has a rust bubble spot under 3rd brake light with rust colored stain forming. Went to dealer and they said GM won't cover it unless there is a hole in it. They told me to poke a hole in the body and it will be covered. I called GM and got a run around and finally got a basically tuff s---, you're on your own. Well I'm unloading this piece of crap and taking my buisness elsewere.

You support American and get the shaft. Wife needs a new car and wanted a Chevy but after this I'll never buy another GM product in my life. I had a 1987 Honda which was parked outside everyday with not one rust problem what so ever.

What you were told is the standard rust "rust-through" warranty.

The curiosity I have is if the paint was damaged by an impact or scrape in this area, perhaps by a garage door or something else, that led to the corrosion progressing.

If that '87 Honda were in a northern state where salt is used on the roads, it would be a rust bucket by now. Still, California does have salt-air problems near the ocean, and it does snow in the mountains. But the California climate is gentler to car bodies than in most parts of the country. And vehicles do tend to start rusting by the time they are 6-7 years old.
