VRBO NOT by owner anymore

Beware when sending inquiries about vacation rentals on VRBO. The vast majority of listings are not by owner, but by rental management companies. If not careful, you will get contacted by a pushy rental management company although your intent was to work directly with the owner. VRBO is dead, and this is unfortunate. It was a such a good site connecting vacation property owners and renters.

When we had rental property on the Outer Banks, we used a local real estate company (we never even considered using a national company) to watch, maintain and rent our property. Consequently, we use local real estate companies when inquiring about a place to rent. Many owners do not wish to rent property themselves. The smaller, local real estate companies can generally find what you're looking for in an area while giving you personal attention that a national chain can't match.
