SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI -- I rented a car in Memphis with the intention of driving to Springfield Missouri. The time frame was for 1 day. When I dropped off the car in Springfield, the man at the counter said something strange to me. "If you have any problems, Maam, call the Memphis branch because that's where you rented the car from." I didn't think any more about it until I received my Visa bill with an extra $487.00 cost. I called Springfield and they told me to call Memphis, I called Memphis and they told me to call a 1-800 number. I called that number and got a message saying there was a 30 minute wait time. I called at noon time and waited over an hour, no response from Hertz customer service. I called back at 4:00 P.M. and waited an hour and a half, still no response. I called again at 5:00 P.M. and stayed on the line for an hour and 40 minutes. Once again, I waited for someone from Hertz to answere the phone. Each time I called the phone message indicated that there was a half hour wait time in order to speak to a representative. No one ever answered. Anyway, I became frustrated and turned the matter over to my credit card company and they are handling it. When I looked closer at the receipt, it states that I rented a Toyota Camry. We were given a Chevy compact. It says that we kept the car for 2 days and returned it to Kansas City. We had the car 1 day and returned it to Springfield. They overcharged us by almost $500.00 without justification. Very bad experience.

You were smart to dispute the charge. Your credit card company is better equipped to point out the obvious error to Hertz and obtain a credit. You may also want to file an official complaint at: http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/index.shtml

Did Hertz ever mention a one-way rental fee? Those can be several hundred dollars on top of the price of the car rental itself. This fee is supposed cover the cost of getting the car back to the original airport.

You evidently have a final receipt, because you said it indicates you had the car 2 days. If you *don't* have a final receipt, you can get one online at the Hertz website a week after the rental.

The receipt should itemize the charges. Hard to believe an extra day (that you should not have been charged) could be $500. What does it say?

Someone, either you or the CC company, needs to communicate with Hertz to get this straightened out. It's hard to imagine that they won't answer the phone. I agree with Ben_There - sounds like a one-way fee was added, but that is just one of several questions to be answered.
