NORTHRIDGE, CALIFORNIA -- I approached the register to pay my tab (Order no. 391270, Date 07-25-2012, 2:18 pm).

Usually I am greeted by an employee taking my payment, always pleasant and courteous. In this case the manager (Arturo [snip]), who had never before taken my payment, simply stared at me without saying a word. Annoyed by this discourtesy, I just stared back at him for a few seconds, then I said to him, "Do you speak?" Then he did.

When I presented my VISA card, he asked for ID. I explained that I had recently lost my billfold with ID. I had received the replacement VISA card but no other replacement cards yet. He insisted that he must have ID. (My VISA card is for debit, not credit. On that date there was slightly under $2,000 in my checking account. The amount of my check was $19.65). I told him that I, with a friend, routinely patronize this store about twice a week and have done so for at least three months. And that I had never been asked for ID!

Still the manager balked, directing my attention to a sign near the register stating that ID will be solicited under certain conditions. I repeated that in approximately 24 previous meals at this store over the last three months, never once had the acting cashier ever asked for ID, nor directed my attention to the sign. I replied, of course, that in any event there was firmly established precedent for my not needing to present ID.

I needed a haircut; maybe that's what offended him.

Im sure he wasnt discrimimnating against because of the haircut. Hes just doing his job. With identify thefts going on these days, be glad that hes goes the extra step, asking for ID as alot of store clerks dont ask for ID.

I can't agree with you regarding precedent - IMO it does not apply.

I don't see evidence that the manager was offended, but it appears that you were. Both by the manager's lack of greeting you, and the manager asking to see ID. If that card is branded VISA and it isn't signed, I believe requesting ID is the proper thing to do. I actually always appreciate it when venders ask for my ID - I don't sign my cards on purpose. Very few do, though they are supposed to.

Sounds like the manager was being passive aggressive because you called him out on his less than courteous behavior.

So, how was the bill paid then? I know certain places do require ID with a card, credit or debit and though they may not always ask for it, can at will. It sounds like this manager was having a bad day and took it out on you because you asked him if he spoke.

I can't speak for other members but by golly when I walk up to pay my bill I at least expect to be acknowledged not glared at. Years ago I would have probably put up with it, but no more.

I also don't have a problem with additional identification being requested especially with a photo ID as proof I am who I say I am. Talk to some members around here who were charged on their cards, cried "foul" and blamed the business for accepting their credit card which had been stolen. It honestly takes a few days to alert your card companies your wallet is missing. Thieves don't take long to do whatever they wish with your information.

I'm one of those who does sign the back of my credit and debit cards, but I also put "see ID" next to my signature. It's a little disconcerting to see how many cashiers look at that and still don't ask for ID. Fortunately, that doen't happen too often as we generally go places that have card swipe machines that customers use.

Danny, I, too, put "check ID' on the back, but I dont put my signature.

With my CC, it says that it's not valid unless signed. To me, that means that if someone tries to use a card that says "See ID", then the card isn't valid since it's not signed. I think I may have had this discussion with a customer when I worked as a cashier many years ago.

I have 'See ID' on my cards.
Steve, that may be true, but I don't think there are too many cashiers who are aware of which CC companies have that policy...unless there's been a problem and they have been notified of it. But, I don't know who would complain unless someone steals someone's card and THEY can't use it, which is the reason for it in the first place.

Steve, I have "check ID" on my card, but no signature and Ive used the card numerous times without any problems. And majority of the times they dont even turn the card back over to check for signature. All it matters to them is that the drivers license must match the name on front of the card.

On the back of my Visa card I wrote 'Ask for ID'
