BINGHAMTON, NEW YORK -- June 23,2012 United flight #3873 leaving Binghamton, NY Scheduled to leave at 5:51 A.M. We find out at 4:50 A.M. that our flight crew had "timed out" and there was not another crew to fly us to Duelles airport that day. We all had to get flights on other airlines, so I missed my connecting flight and could not fly out of Binghamton until 3:35 that day. I arrived in Atlanta at 9:30 that eve and lost a whole day of vacation. Coming home on July 1,2012 we ended up sleeping in Duelles airport in the gate area as we could not get home to Binghamton on United Express.

This happens sometimes. The flight crew cannot fly more than 16 hours, including ground time. If they do, not only does the airline get fined, but the pilot can lose their license. Besides I would not want to fly with a tired crew. Since this was the airlines fault, they should owe you some type of compensation

Was there any delay due to weather or something else out of the airline's control? If not, my guess would be the same as shorty's, that you are due some compensation.

This is one of the big risks of flying on super early flights out of small airports.

Chances are your crew worked the last flight into Binghampton the day before - and flight was probably really delayed. By law the pilots and flight attendants have to stay on the ground extra time.

Lets say they were supposed to get in at 8pm, but storms in DC delayed them till 1am... it would not be possible for them to fly again by 5:51am as they have not had enough rest to legally fly.

At bigger airports like Dulles or Chicago this is not a problem as there are plenty of crews on call... However, at most airports there are no extra crew sitting around.
