Uhaul - Price Gouging

Auto Transport - Complaint

CARLISLE, PENNSYLVANIA -- I rented an auto transport from Elmira Ny to Carlisle Pa for a truck show. Turned it in at Carlisle the next day. it cost me 138.00 including insurance and tax, didn't think that was too bad. Went back three days later to rent same thing and they had jacked the price up to 238.00 because of the truck nationals were in town. They are price gouging the very people that are using their services. I will never use their services again. they had 5 trailers there but said they wanted to keep them in town and if I would return it to their store I could rent it for 54.00. Nice but I live 200 miles away from Carlisle so they were just trying to p*ss me off, which they did.

Don't use Uhaul cause they will use you. Not a good company. customer service sucks, sucks.

Supply and demand. I don't think they were trying to piss you off.

If the trailer is kept local during peak demand, it may be rented 4 times in 3 or 4 days. If they let it go elsewhere one-way, it probably won't return for some time.

I agree with trmn8r. It's supply and demand. I go a fair number of NASCAR races every year. Hotels withing a 40-50 radius of the given track the race is being held at that weekend will typically double or triple their regular prices for duration of the weekend. The same principle is in effect for your situation. It's also logical that they would want to keep their trailers and trucks in town during these times as they can make more money rented it out more often. The fact that you live 200 miles away isn't of their concern.

I'd also bet that if you tried another outfit like Penske for a trailer during that same time period you'd see that their rates magically doubled as well, this isn't just limited to U-Haul.

During Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, rooms that you can get now for $35 go for $350. UHaul also keeps track of where things are going: if they need trucks in Omaha, trucks going to Omaha are cheap. If you want to take a truck from Omaha to another destination, will be more expensive.
