British Airways Complaint - stolen items from baggage
NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE -- My sister was on vacation in USA for the last few months. She was scheduled to leave USA on the 10th of December 2005 from
RDU (Raleigh Durham, North Carolina) to Newark Liberty International airport: American Airlines 4639. (American Eagle)
My sister's flight from RDU took off late and by the time she arrived, she had already missed her connection to London. Since it was already past 8 in the evening, all American airlines counters were closed. After rebooking her tickets from EWR to Kolkata, India for the next day, via London, New Delhi, my sister was unable to trace her luggage. The British Airways people behind the counter assured her that her bags will be transferred to her next day's flight. The next day, after spending 24hours in the luggage room of American airlines, her bags were transferred to British airways.
Upon getting her bags in India, my sister found that her combination locks on both her bags were broken. Most of her stuff inside the bags were missing. The missing items consisted of personal gifts, personal items, such as clothing, shoes, cosmetics, cell phone charger and chocolates. We estimate the total value of the missing items to be around 1500$ not to mention the sentimental value attached to these items.
It was quite impossible for the mishap to occur either at London (where there was only couple of hours for transfer) or at New Delhi, where she got her bags within minutes of her landing. The same was in Kolkata. We suspect that the "misplacement" occurred at ERW airport.
Could you please advise as to what steps should we take?
