HOUSTON, TEXAS -- Out of nowhere, I received a statement from Convergent - no idea who they are - claiming I owe them a large sum of money, but they will settle for a percentage. Well, I have no idea what this for and why. I've been calling for almost a week - daily - trying to reach a person to find out why I was sent this notice, but I only get a full mail box or asked to leave a message. I've called right at 8:00 am or a few minutes after, then I've called throughout the day, but to no avail. I did find their website, and called one of the numbers posted - same result, no matter which number I called. Is this a joke?

They're a collection agency, looks like. Is there a chance you had an outstanding debt somewhere? Send them a letter, via certified mail, asking for proof of the debt and the fact that the debt is yours.

Find out the statute of limitations in your jurisdiction: usually 4 to 6 years. If they say you owe from a debt older then that, tell them to pound sand. Also let them know any negative reports to credit agencies will result in a complaint to both the State and Federal Consumer Affairs
The debt may be someones with a name close to you or lived at an address you once had. They buy debt for pennies on the dollar and go fishing
Whatever you do, do NOT agree to anything or send them any money. That can reset the Statute of Limitations
