United Airline - Thrown Over Cliff If Flight Delayed

Complaint

BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS -- My granddaughter who is fifteen, took a United Airline flight from Boston to Atlanta. She had a connecting flight from New Jersey to Atlanta. Her flight from Boston was delayed and she missed her connecting flight through no fault of her own. The personnel at United displayed a nonchalant, no care attitude. taking no responsibility. She ended up staying in the children room all night. They claimed there we were no flights until 6:30 the next morning.

Needless to say, we were upset and concerned about her safety. They were very callous. I will never take that airline again.

What more should the airline have done? Evidently there is a "children's room" (which surprised me), where I assume she was safer than exposed in a waiting area somewhere.

Travelling by air comes with the risk of missed connections. This needs to be taken into account when a minor is planning to travel unaccompanied.

Did you pay extra to have her travel as an unaccompanied minor?

Her safety wasn't at risk. Sounds like the airline had her in a safe place

When my daughter was about 13 or 14, she wanted to fly by herself (Her father and I insisted on paying the extra fee for accompanied minor) from CA to VA. She was told no. She had a flight delayed, and yes, while I freaked out, calling the airline, they transferred me to someone that was in charge of her, taking care of her.

I don't know if it's the individual airline(s) that maintain an area for this purpose (hers was American). But, I was assured that she was fine, they had pizza, tv, video games, and I was updated on which flight they were putting her on next. I also got to speak to her..putting my fears at ease.

That extra fee is well worth the price.

If your grandchild flew without paying the unaccompanied minor charge, her parents or whoever sent her attested to the fact that she was sufficiently adult to deal with whatever came up--like an adult. Don't blame the airlines for her custodian's failure to properly evaluate either her abilities or the possibilities.

This example shows why when you pay an unaccompanied minor charge, they WILL NOT allow the child to be scheduled for the last flight out of an airport for the day. They do not want the child stranded. If she had paid to be an unaccompanied minor, she would not have been allowed to fly on this schedule.
