Rock Lobster Tail - Complaint

VIRGINIA BEACH, VIRGINIA -- Up to about 8 years ago, when I moved south and away from my sister, we used to always celebrate our birthdays at Red Lobster. The rock lobster tail and Large frozen strawberry daiquiris were our traditional birthday dinners.

Friday Aug 17, 2012, when my sister and I finally were able to see each other after all these years, decided to do our "traditional" birthday meal at Red Lobster once again.

Excitedly we ordered our Large Strawberry Daiquiris, which the only complaint we had was...what happened to the cute little lobster necklaces you used to get with them? They were cheap but an added little 'bonus' for drinking the big one !!!

Oh well, she decided to go with the Surf n Turf, me, I wanted and had been dreaming of the Super Rock lobster tail of years ago. I asked the server do you still have that big tail? She said it was 9oz, which didn't mean anything to me....I ordered it

My meal consisted of salad, mashed potatoes and a lobster tail that was slightly bigger than my sisters surf and turf lobster tail. 6 bites, truly, 6 bites and it was gone.

The lobster tail I remember was so large it was almost too much to eat....not this little thing......

Not only was I still hungry, but they had the balls to charge me $28.00 for the plate....

terrible value........really? you are going to charge me $28.00 for a salad, mashed potatoes and a small tail? really?

Not again......I will definitely not recommend Red Lobster for their portions.

A rock lobster is not actually a lobster - it is a crayfish and smaller and tougher than lobster. I had it only once in my life, at a Red Lobster. That was around 1990 and the last time I was at RL. It was horrible.

I had a similar experience where the tail was tough and chewy. The waitress, after taking the order & serving it, explained that you have to order the cold water tail. Even doing so it's more expensive and like an appetizer being only 9 ounces. Bottom line: It's not worth the money and I don't order lobster for this reason.

FYI: Want a big one pound tail for under $20 bucks? Costco sells them every month when they have their Seafood Festival. Yes you have to cook it but it's easy. Either steam it or broil it on the grill. Only takes 10 minutes. Now you're eating well without the steep price.

Know the difference between a warm water (tough) and a cold water (tender) lobster tail? The warm water tails have spots on the shell, the cold water ones don't. Now you know what to look for.

My Costco has usually has 2 small tails for $18 or 2 large tails (I never paid attention to the size) for around $34. And they taste much better than whatever "Lobster" you get at Red Lobster.
