ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA -- I have a 2002 Acura MDX. I went to the Acura Dealer on Duke Street Alexanria VA. They have done all the service calls on this car. I had an engine ligth that came. After checking the manual, it suggested that I take it to the service manager for the dealership, and that is what I did. Larry [snip] had the car checked out. After checking out the car they said it would be $4,000.00 to repair the Rear diff and VTm control. Since I did not have that kind of money for the repair. I was told by the service department to drive it and when the light came on again to turn it off and it should re-set.

The next day I took it to a local tranmission place. They took the car and called me later that day to report that they had replaced the chip and I could pick the car up. The cost $180.00. What difference between $4,000.00 and $180.00. They did not replace the whole system. They determined from a test what chip needed to be replaced. Since the repair the car has not had any more problems.

Why do this to a customer?

I'm curious as to what this "chip" is they are refering to is. Few if any cars made past 1996 have ECU or PCM "chips". Any programing or updates are done through a computer via the OBDII port.
