LEESBURG, GEORGIA -- I purchased my groceries at the store and they didn't offer to carry out
them to my car. I notice every woman was offer to carry out their groceries.

I pay the same amount for my purchase as they do. What is it with these stores and service to male customers. I had to get loud and request assistance with my purchase. I finally had someone carry my purchase to my car. Does Publix have a rule not to assist male customers. I guess they need to post a sign that says male customer cannot have assistance in carry out their purchase.

The Food Lion where I do most of my shopping, doesn't offer that service period. The Kroger I sometimes frequent will do it if you ask for it. Another local chain, Martins, pretty must makes it almost manditory, I have to tell them, I can handle the herclean task of carrying a gallon of milk out to my car myself.

I would have to guess that the Publix's stance on it, is that many men may see it as somewhat emasculating to have someone else carry their grocceries for them. I could easily be wrong though.

Unless you are obviously too handicapped and frail appearing to carry your own purchases, most stores assume most males are able to and prefer to carry their own purchases. As the first poster said, it is probably assumed that many men would be offended at the offer to carry their bags to the car. I don't think it's anything personally against helping males as well as females, it's just the general mind set that many people assume men not to need the help women do. Discriminating yes, but I don't think it's personal.

On the opposite side, I am a female, getting older but still very capable of doing my own lifting and carrying and don't need any help getting around. I find it annoying that it is always assumed that I need help getting my groceries out to the car, even when it is a small purchase and even more annoying that it is the mindset that because I am an older female I must need help. But I don't take it personally and just let them know that I don't need the help. One of these days I may find myself in a position where I do and in that case I will either ask for it or take them up on it gratefully if it is offered. But as long as I am able to get my items in the grocery cart then it should be assumed I can get them out as well so I don't expect to be pestered with offers to do it for me and they should wait to be asked to help me.

If you need help, continue to ask as you have done this time and I'm sure Publix and many other places will be happy to assist you with carrying your items to your vehicle.

in this day and age if you want help you have to ask for it. anyone offering to help you are long gone. i am also an older female and i take out my own groceries. this includes 12 packs of soda and 24 count water.

i agree, it does sound discriminatory to offer carry out service to ONLY female shoppers.

They don't just offer it to female customers - my father is always offered carryout service when he shops at Publix. My fiance also gets asked if he would like carryout at Publix. So perhaps it is your location or just your perception. Are you a regular at this location and frequently turn down the service? Because eventually, if they get to know you and you are always saying no, they will just stop asking.
