Target - Red Card Accounting Office Cost Me $600

Red Card-or-Any Debit Card - Complaint

FRIDLEY, MINNESOTA -- Last year I noticed a withdrawal from my checking account by using Target's Red Card. I hadn't been in the store on the day of or day before the withdrawal showed up in my account. I called Target and asked to speak with an individual in accounting. My mistake was not getting the indivudal's name. But according to this male accounting person, "no, I hadn't made any purchases in that amount, even dating back to the first of the month." So I called my bank and put a stop payment on the amount.

Six weeks later when I went to use my Red Card at Target it was declined. Turns out that banks, unlike checks when a "Stop Payment" is put into effect, they will put the stop payment on the ENTIRE bank debit card. I called Target, asked them why they let six weeks lapse before contacting me, allowing $600 worth of charges pile up. Nope, they don't do that. They were 'nice enough' to drop the fees down to $300. That made me feel OH SO MUCH BETTER - yea right!

So no don't trust Target's RED CARD and their accounting department. AND do read the fine print on any or all of your debit cards.

So, you have a debit card with the Target name but the money is debited from your personal checking account? Target is a third party that has access to your checking account? What is the purpose in the arrangement? This sounds like a disaster waiting for a place to happen.

I don't understand exactly what happened or what fees you were hit with. Did you stop payment on just one transaction or the whole account? If just the one, and someone had access it would explain how a bunch of bogus charges may have piled up. Were these fees overdrafts?

Instead of a stop payment, you should have opened a fraud complaint with your bank and the local police. The accountant telling you that you hadn't used the card with those amounts would have been able to help with the complaint with the bank and helped you get your money back from the bank (who released the money without your permission.) But unfortunately you chose a stop payment, something that is seen as suspicious (It makes you look bad in the sense why wouldn't they open a fraud investigation into their account?).

I still suggest you open a fraud investigation with your bank. What happens when it is another one of your cards?

Did you call this number?

Monitor Billing Statements of Existing Accounts for Unusual or Unauthorized Activity.
Keeping copies of your charge slips and comparing them to billing statement information will help you catch fraud quickly. If you ever see unauthorized activity on your Target Visa Credit Card, Target Credit Card or Target Debit Card, call 1-888-755-5856.

I am confused. If your bank closed your debit card they did it for your protection, that way nobody else can use it since it was just used without your consent. Target did not allow 6 weeks to go by without contacting you about the $600 you knew about the next day and took care of the situation. What are the fee's coming from?

This is a Target debit card. It is not issued though this poster's bank, it is issued through Target and can only be used at Target. It is used instead of writing checks at this particular store. The poster put a stop payment through their own bank as you would put a stop payment on a check. I'm really surprised Target didn't take control of this situation with the first call.
