BANGOR, MAINE -- We stopped in to Truck Works & More @ 2230 Broadway in Bangor, Maine on a Friday. We walked in and instantly realized we knew one of the guys behind the counter. After; the we haven’t seen you and how have you been. We told him what we were looking for. He took us outside to see what they had for truck caps, but not without his boss “ Mike” (the owner) who followed close on our heels. As my husband was catching up with the guy we knew, the owner “ Mike” knew he had a hot buyer (ME). I told him what we were looking for and he said come inside and I will get you a price. He wrote on a business card 2 prices. One without tax and one with tax. We went home with the card. It was the next week when I called the guy we knew and told him to order the cap. He figured up the price and asked is that with or without tax? I told him with. He said he would have to see the card. So we had to make another 50 mile round trip to show him the card. He called “Mike” on the phone. I could tell it wasn’t going to be in my court. He said he would call me after “Mike” got in that afternoon. I left him with a photo copy of the card with the price and a $50.00 coupon I had printed off line before coming in that day. As, expected no call came! But, “Mr. Mike” later that week e-mailed me, just to say that he had figured that $50.00 coupon in on the cap quote. What it boiled down to, was “Mike” had miscalculated the quote on the cap and was trying to save every penny he could so, over $50.00 he lost a very potential customer and receives a review like this. By the way, I gave him the opportunity to rectify and meet his original quote before writing this. He never e-mailed me back. We drove 100 miles to Caps Place & More in Wales, Maine. They were wonderful and treated us like paying customers and future references’ should be treated. They put the MORE in their name. Thanks Holly!!!

I do think that he should've honored the price. But I also understand that he was probably going to lose money on the deal and that's not good for business either. I don't know what the margins are on pickup truck caps, but I do know that they are something that people really don't shop for all that often. Mike likely knew that even if he gave you the original deal and even if you came back years later and bought another cap from him at the correct price, he'd still have lost money overall. That's just me speculating though.

He may very well would have lost money, but I think more importantly here is the fact he lost a customer but also put a bad word and comment out there on his business. I myself am a small business owner who has to give out estimates everyday. I have made errors over the years on quotes, but by golly I suck it up not my customer. And with that type of business ethic, our business is a successful and happy one. But thank you for your out-put and over view on the subject.
