MOLINE, ILLINOIS -- I needed to replace a passenger side window on a Ford Explorer, and first called Safelite. They quoted me 278.95 plus a $9.95 disposal fee; including tax, it came $305.32. I asked what is the clean up fee for? I have removed all the glass myself, and they told me it was to clean up the special glues used in the repair. I made an appointment, but knew this was way out of bounds. I called another local small shop, and they quoted me $127.00 installed. Needless to say, I cancelled my appointment and went to the local shop. Got great service, in and out in 45 mins for $127.00 I asked the manager if they used any glue in this replacement; he said no, just 2 rivets. I got my window fixed for one-third what Safe Lite wanted, and the part about the fee was a fabrication. In my experience Safe Lite was going to gouge me on the price of this repair and charge me a bogus fee. I recommend going to a local vendor, call around and get some other estimates before deciding on a shop to replace auto glass. I was disapointed Safe Lite seems to greatly overcharge and use bogus fees.
