Kohls - Completely Offended

Complaint

TAYLOR, MICHIGAN -- I hope that somebody "high up" at Kohls sees this. I have been shopping at Kohls for many years and I am an MVC card holder. I stopped into my local store yesterday and was completely offended as a Christian(not that anybody seems to care about that anymore). It was September 12th and the store's Christmas decorations were up! Every year, retailers seem to be extending their Christmas shopping season. It use to be, once upon a time, that Christmas Decorations went up after Thanksgiving. Then it was moved up to Halloween. What's next..Labor Day...Fourth of July??? Enough is enough. I am a Christian...and it is offensive to have Christmas abused and demeaned in such a way.

Gotta agree on that one, the force feeding of holidays for sales is out of hand. Takes the joy out of it and retailers don't seem to get that folks get burnt out and don't shop. Or they are like me and indifferently wait until the last minute because you KNOW there are going to be huge overstocks. Hey, maybe I'll buy that big screen TV this year, on Dec 27th!

What decorations were displayed? This is bizarre.

I am Christian as well, but I find this offensive just based on being a person and shopper.

How is this offensive? I'm a Christian and I'm not offended. Remembering Christ and all that He did should be remembered year round, not just at Christmas

Christmas is a celebration of the birth of Christ; the trees, wreaths, snowmen and the like are nothing more than a marketing tool to try to get you to spend more money at Christmas.

I am no more offended by early decorations than I would be if they hung buckets of paint from the ceiling; neither of which reflect the true meaning of Christmas and have no impact on the way I think one way or the other.

So, you're not offended by the Christmas decorations being put up after Thanksgiving but as a Christin you are offended by them being put up in Sept? As a Christian one would think that you would be offended by the commercialism of a religious holiday and not by what time of the year decorations are put out.

as a Jewish shopper, I AM offended.

I am a Christian also. I don't find it offensive religion wise because I understand the true meaning of the holiday and don't let it bother me but I do find it quite annoying that the stores seem to be getting out each holidays decorations earlier and earlier. It is not only annoying but a bit confusing to find Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas decorations all competing for space on the store shelves during the same time periods. Not to mention I have seen some stores, Wal-Mart specifically putting out Valentine's Day decorations Dec. 26th, then Easter decorations before Valentine's Day is even over.

I can understand Christmas decorations going up in late Oct. but I have seen a couple of stores that start in late Aug. in recent years. I just find it ridiculous and for the most part I wish they would get over one holiday before cramming store shelves with items for the next one. As far as Christmas decorations I've noticed some people in my area are decorating their homes earlier and earlier also, some at the beginning of Nov. I guess given the cost, they want to get as much bang for their buck as possible but come on, I can't even get in the Christmas mood that early.

This isn't exactly new or anything I remember when I was a kid, the Sears catalog with the Christmas merchandise would show up in September. That was some 20 years ago. I didn't find if offensive then, and I do not find it offensive now. Annoying perhaps, but not offensive.

You'd think they would wait until the halloween decorations are put away.

As a Christian and looking at this from a religious prospective I am not offended. What really Gauls me is how retailers just can't wait to ram the Christmas sales down your throat three months ahead of time. They want you to spend, spend spend. Max those cards out, it's Christmas! You are so burned out by this that it's hard to enjoy the holiday.

Then they get a second shot at you with the after Christmas sales. Like you didn't spend enough, now spend more. It's not about Christmas, it's about increasing the retailer's bottom line. I'm glad it only comes once a year.

Retailers have 2 seasons. Before Christmas and after Christmas.

And what is one to do when one is not a christian that celebrates in that way? When one is not a christian at all. Don't go back, you can choose to be a customer somewhere else.
But as merchandising gets pushed ahead at all stores you will lose all your shopping outlets?
It is also possible that the stores are chasing the dollar early because they need to be sure they have the income recorded this year.

I sometimes leave my Christmas tree up until April because I like the subtle lighting it provides and I'm often too busy to bother taking it down til then. And as "FoDaddy" noted, I've always enjoyed looking at the Christmas stuff in the Sears, Wards, and Spiegel catalogs that came out in September - and that was 50 years ago!

While that's way too early for Christmas, what I find even more offensive, is walking into my local CVS today and seeing a 7 foot Grim Reaper with a horrible skull-like face and sickle staring down at me (fake of course). I find all of Halloween stuff offensive (esp. as a Christian). I can't believe they would put this stuff out there and let little children see it. I would think the really little ones would be terrified.
And yes, I agree that all the holidays have gotten WAY too commercialized. It's just a big money grab.
