United Parcel Service - Thief in the hen house...

Complaint

On September 14, 2012, I placed a package containing a Sprint iPhone 4S 32gb into my local "secure" UPS drop box. It was picked up that evening around 5 pm as indicated by the tracking number. It never moved after that. According to Sprint, the phone is in use by another account so I am sure the phone was stolen at UPS. Sprint will not deactivate the phone because it is in use and UPS will not track the package because the label was purchased by Amazon. Amazon really can't be bothered with it and issued me a gift card for the price they offered me for the phone ($455). I am grateful for that and want no money from anyone at this point, nor do I want the phone. What I want (and expect) UPS to do is investigate the fact that they have a thief on board. I have no confidence in placing another package in that box and I probably use UPS over 100 times a year. No more. USPS Priority Mail from this point forth.

I don't know what the statement "UPS won't track it because the shipping label was purchased by Amazon" means, but if Amazon isn't interested in pursuing it, there is no incentive for UPS to look into it.

You say you use UPS 100 times a year. Have you any incident like this happen before? Since there was evidently no loss to you, you may want to consider carefully before switching. Also, USPS is not good for larger packages. The rates are not as good, and their equipment drops packages from 5 or 6' high (was told this by my postmaster).

@trmn8r I did a review on this a week or two ago but I deleted it (before replies) once I remembered my m3c name. I did a "trade-in" with Amazon. You send them your electronics and they issue a gift card for an agreed amount. As part of the transaction, you print out a UPS label (from their account) and send the item in. I got the gift card after MUCH hassle with Amazon.

The incentive for UPS to look into it is in the title...they have a thief in the hen house. They picked up my package, scanned it, and it disappeared on their watch. It wasn't "lost". It was either taken for personal use or sold but someone is definitely using the item as we speak.

With all the UPS theft-related postings floating around the net, they should definitely attempt to weed out these unscrupulous employees. For the most part, I've had few problems with them over the years but when the day that changes, it's changed and unfortunately that day has come for me. How secure am I supposed to feel putting something in that box next week?

And btw...You can't beat USPS for rates. I can ship in a small flat rate box for $5.15. I've used UPS more because the box is closer but I'll drive a few miles for security. I'd feel differently if they'd seized the moment and been MORTIFIED about the theft but I don't think they give a rip about thieves on the payroll.

Several years ago I worked at a home health care equipment store. I was in charge of signing for shipments. I was opening a box one day and to my surprise, inside was a $25,000.00 Rolex watch. I immediatly UPS and told them they had delivered the package by mistake. I didn't notice at the time it was addressed to a jewelry store in town. Two supervisors showed up and retrieved the package. To this day I honestly believe they stole the package, as they told me to "keep quiet" about the incident.
