Target Store -

Preopened and tested cosmetics/unopened checkout lanes - Complaint

MIRAMAR, FLORIDA -- This morning I shopped at Target for cosmetics and home store products. Two Problems occurred.
PROBLEM 1- There were 27 checkout counters and only aisle 16 was open. It took quite a while to get up to the cashier and when I was next in line the cashier persuaded the customer in front of me to open a charge account. I had to wait for papers to be filled out. It irritated me that after waiting so long, I had to wait longer. There should be more open checkout lanes and charge accounts should be opened at a separate counter.
PROBLEM 2- Upon arriving home, I opened the box of Olay Foundation that I have just purchased to check the color. I noticed that the container had a smudge on the clear plastic cover and around the opening to the jar. Apparently someone had tested the foundation and returned it to the display rack. I don't know how much make-up remains in the jar but I am leaving for a trip and not going to have time to return it. I will just have to use it. I think there should be a way of testing products while keeping new merchandise secured until purchased.

I agree 100% with the first part of your complaint. I had a similar experience the other day. 2 lanes were open and there was an elderly woman applying for a Target card holding up one line. As much as I love Target, I despise this time of year because they really push their Target credit card. And what really gets me upset is when the cashier ignores everyone else waiting in line. They don't apologize for the wait, they don't let the other customers know there will be a delay.

The second part of your complaint, I disagree with. It's not cost effective to have "samples" for customers to test. Not when you consider the low price of drug store brands. If you want to be able to test the product beforehand, use high-end cosmetics. For a few bucks more, you can test everything at the counter and enjoy a lax return policy. I recommend Sephora, you can return anything, anytime.

I'm a guy, but wouldn't this require a cosmetics counter type deal, and thus the prices of stuff would be higher due to the overhead?

It is selfish customers who do things like this, thinking it is harmless. But it causes great inconveniece for us as consumers. There are victims.

As for the checkouts, I am surprised that on a weekday morning 16 checkouts is insufficient. How long was the wait? As to opening charge accounts, a lot of retailers (eg Sears, JCP, Kohls, Target, etc) are doing this at checkouts. I agree it is aggravating - it appears the store's philosophy is that is the best way to get a customer to do it.

Trmn8r, only one check-out lane was open. Lane #16 out of 27 :)

How many people were in line? Target has a policy of opening up another lane when the line gets longer than 3 people. Target employees get commission and perks based on the number of charge accounts they open up. If there was a lane just for charge accounts, then one employee would be getting all the credit and that wouldn't be fair to the other employees.

I don't think there should be a lane for charge accounts, but they should seriously consider setting up a booth near the entrance or something. Applying for their credit card is extremely time consuming when the guest and the cashier are slow. The problem I keep running into is that the cashier doesn't inform the people in line or I'll have my cart unloaded and the next thing I know, the person who was in front of me is now applying for a Target card. Either way I'm screwed. I've had several turn their light off and tell me to load my cart up and go to another line. I'm sorry but it is unacceptable to make the rest of us wait to pay for our purchases when someone is applying for credit. I have no problem waiting my turn when people are paying. But when I'm ready to pay and leave the store, I shouldn't have to wait behind someone who is applying for credit. I have left my stuff on the belt and walked out several times, when the cashier hasn't so much as apologized for the wait. Because it is their fault and they should at least say hey I'm sorry there's going to be a slight delay.
