BENTON HARBOR, MICHIGAN -- My Whirlpool front load washer is having problems with a smell coming from it. I have used Affresh and did the cleaning cycles. What else can be done? Still no response from anyone.

The problem with front loads is they don't use enough water to dilute the wash water. That stuff you smell is rotting lint, skin oils and skin cells. You can use anything you like to sterilize the washer. But after the sterilization after awhile the stuff starts to rot again. The junk is in all the small crevices of the washer.

You can try running it empty with a little chlorine bleach and detergent every couple of days to keep the bacteria down and dilute the junk inside. But with every load of clothing there will be more skin and oils. Wash curtains and a ton of dust is added to the mix.
Yes, we have come to the age where we have to wash the washer more than we wash clothes.

I think the problem is more so that people keep the door closed tight on their front load washers between loads, whereas before with toploaders, the tub never was completely sealed, and air was free to circulate. It is just like if you ever had a refrigerator that lost power and the door remained closed, mold and mildew will form even if the interior was clean. Maybe try leaving the door ajar if possible.

The front loads have a thing called a spider in them. The spider traps all kinds of gooky stuff and collects water.. even with the door open they don't dry out for days or weeks.
