Spirit Airlines - Weather Conditions And This Company Would Not Let Me Reschedule Our Flight

ILLINOIS -- I am a single mother of a 19 year old college honor roll student who wanted to go to new york for her 20th birthday, so I saved for 1 year and by working 3 jobs in order to pay for this trip in full. Now Spirit Airlines will not allow me to re-scheduled our trip. We need to reschedule this trip because New York is under a serious evacuation for safety, due to the Superstorm Sandy.

It has been nationallly televised as an advisory not to travel to New York as the entire New York and surrounding places are under water. This Spirit Airlines will not recognize the safety hazards for my family. I am not asking for a refund, i'm only asking to reschedule to March 2013. If the storm had not been a factor and the aftermath wouldn't still be a factor then we would be traveling next week. But mother nature has spoken and we have to listen.

Anyone out there if you are able to help me pass on this to consumers like me. I would appreciate it greatly. As a single parent, living in a difficult time, with a daughter who attends college and now not being allowed to even reschedule due to this destination which has affected millions, spirit airlines is not the airlines to go with.

The airports are reopen, as far as I have heard. Airlines were allowing passengers to reschedule closer to the storm - my guess is that period has come to an end.

Also, the power is back on in NYC, buses and subways are starting to run again. IMO you are the victim of bad timing, but I don't see that Spirit did anything wrong. They are flying that plane, and if your daugher cancels that could be one more empty seat.

Trmn8r is correct. I checked other airline sites as well and the latest alternate travel date I could find was prior to 12/20/12. Spirit has a shorter period as they indicate on their website:

In order to offer customers flexibility, Spirit Airlines has activated its Hurricane Buster protection policy in response to potential flight changes resulting from Hurricane Sandy.

For customers holding reservations for travel to, from or through affected locations on the dates specified below, Spirit Airlines will waive the change fee and difference in fare, provided that customers rebook their travel plans before the date and time of their original reservation, and travel on or before November 14, 2012.

Customers who wish to move their travel beyond November 14, 2012, will not be charged a change fee, however any difference in fare will apply.

Customers can make changes to their reservations affected by this Hurricane Buster on Spirit’s website at www.spirit.com under the “Manage Travel” tab.

Customers may also call the Spirit Reservations Center at 800-772-7117 (Español 800-756-7117) to make their flight changes.

During the storm crisis the "Manage Travel" site would not accept changes. The phone number listed rang but was never answered even after holding for well over an hour killing my cell battery. You can't ask customers to follow certain rules and programs then make them impossible to use. How many people do you know that can just "reschedule" a trip or vacation withing 14 days when they don't know if or when the power will return to their homes and with flooding and wind damage all around them?
