Ashley Furniture - Awful smell in Ashley dresser

Ashley Dresser - Complaint

SAVANNAH, GEORGIA -- We bought a dresser for over $900 from Ashley Furniture about 11 months ago. When it was delivered, it had an awful smell - like rotten fish. We weren't terribly concerned at first because new items often have bad smells that dissipate within a reasonable length of time, and we had a warranty on the furniture that "appeared" to cover it for at least a year. But the smell didn't go away. We tried everything we could think of - baking soda, air fresheners, dryer sheets, pulling out all the drawers and airing them out for several weeks, etc., etc. Some of the things we tried seemed to make the smell less intense for awhile, and so we got hopeful that it would go away. But then it always came back, and became just as bad as before. We recently decided we'd better try to get something done since it was getting close to a year since we bought the dresser and we were worried about the warranty running out. The people at Ashley told us that they would not do anything about the smell because we didn't report it within 72 hours of the delivery. They said that we should have KNOWN that we had to report it that quickly because the terms and conditions of the sale indicate that, and that that information is on the "back of the receipt." There is NOTHING on the back of the receipt or any other paperwork we have. It's possible we signed something in the store that contained that info, but we we do not have a copy of it. And since it was awhile before the dresser was delivered, we referred to the paperwork we did have, which mentioned nothing about a 72-hour deadline. So we're out of luck - they won't replace or fix the dresser or refund our money, and every time we try to actually use the dresser, our clothes smell bad after they've been it. Moreover, the last person we talked to was extremely rude.

Sounds like it is made out of driftwood, or maybe worse - something with additives/adhesives.

It doesn't sound like a warranty issue per se, but more like one of quality of materials.

Trmn8r, I don't know about that..reading all the complaints about Ashley I wouldn't buy a stick of gum from them. It sounds to me more like they were reselling something as new that was actually used and returned. I think that's kind of a strange smell, and I've been around loads of additives/adhesives.

Ashley sure does have considerable complaints. No question about that. But warranties are typically something about the construction of an item, not a smell. From the manufacturer's standpoint, I could see them not wanting to cover a smell because it could have just as easily been something done to it over the last year.

The smell my be from the finish. For many wood products and plywoods Linseed oil is often used in the finish. It has a sharp, pungeant "fishy" smell depending upon how it was used. If used in normal amounts the smell disipates after a short time. If it has been almost a year, it was likely overused or the wood was saturated with the oil.
