NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK -- Every month I get a statement, which is fine, except nothing on the outside of the envelope identifies it as the monthly statement.
Even American Express and practically every other company and utilities identifyies it as such.
Why is this important? Simply because it is just one piece of mail among a dozen others I get from Verizon that are Junk mail (aka advertising. What happens to those also happens to the monthly statements - put in the rcycling bin or trash. Next thing you know I get a past due notice and/or my next statement, when I am lucky to identify it as such has a big past due amount. FWIW, My payments are mailed to P. O. box 920041, Dallas, TX 75392-0041. Not sure where the bills are mailed from.
I am surprised that the FTC or similar organization does not make it a mandatory requirement that "statement enclosed" or similar identification be on the envelope that the bill comes in.
For several years I have made this suggestion to Verizon, but they obviously could care less. I even started mailing a piece of their advertising with my payment trying to make a point.

Most companies has a 'statement enclosed' message on their envelopes, but it is done as a courtsey, it's not required as far as I know.

It's up to the recipient to check their mail before throwing it away, especailly if it is from a company that sends you statements and you are expecting statements. It would be nice if all companies did this, but they don't. I get a lot of junk mail, but it only takes a second to rip it open and verify it to be junk or something important. They can't MAKE people open their mail, they can just send it.

On the positive side, now that you know they DON'T mark the envelopes with statements enclosed, you can watch for them in the future and prevent yourself from accidently throwing them away.

Also as an alternative you can choose to receive notification electronically that your statement is available and pay it online.

I receive VZ bills in the mail, and the envelope has printed on it "Important Bill Statement Enclosed".

Also, over the years, I have gotten to recognize the VZ statement envelope. The size is different than most others, it says "Verizon" and is the only mail from VZ that comes in that size envelope.
