Whirlpool front load washer GHW9150

Complaint

I purchased a front-load washer dryer set with pedestals. We have had a minimal amount of problems with the washer until one month after the extended warranty I purchased went out (of course). The pump went out and we had it replaced which understandable parts do wear out and have to be replaced, BUT, now I started finding pieces of plastic in the clothes after washing. The drum had started shaking badly and banging against the side of the machine. There was also a bad smell of rubber burning. Upon dissecting the machine to find the problem, we could not believe what was found. The bracket that attached to the drum and held the shaft had broken in pieces. The shaft and bearings were in perfect condition itself but the bracket it is mounted in had totally crumbled! It looked like it had been made out of some sort of pot metal. I could not believe it. We paid over $2000.00 for this set of appliances and expected a good quality product. The replacement parts are going to cost more than purchasing a new machine. I have purchased many Whirlpool products and have been very satisfied, even with this machine, until this problem arouse. I still can't believe that Whirlpool has aloud this problem to go unaddressed.

Overall I like the entire Duet line of products, of which the 9150 is a part of. The problem you're describing sounds as if the seal has been damaged around the bearings and has, in turn, damaged the support and suspension to the washer. The 9150, if I remember right, has a six point support/suspension system to keep it balanced.

Ultimately, if the damage is what it sounds like, the start of the damage is produced when the rubber seal is compromised. This happens when the proper detergent is not used in the correct amounts. This is also why most manufacturers require you to use HE labeled detergent in order to not void the warranty. At most, you should only need to use a third of a cup of any HE detergent. In higher concentrations, even less is required.

I would agree that such damage would be beyond repairing cost effectively. It'll mean a slightly mismatched set, but I'd replace the washer too. The 9050, 9150 and 9250 series' are no longer being produced. The closest match, I believe, is in the form of the Maytag 2000 series. Maytag is produced by Whirlpool and I believe this series uses the same pedestals as the 9150, so you should be able to save the expense of replacing it too. You should be able to currently find the 2000 series, I believed referred to as Maytag 201, for about $720.

Best of luck and please keep us posted.
