STARTFORD, CONNECTICUT -- Cracking inside and all around the door. I called a repair person he told me it would cost me over a 1,000 dollars to fix. It's only two an a half years old. Maytag said they can't do anything because I didn't buy the insurance, but it should have lasted longer than two and a half years and I told my son and sister to buy one. I'm going to tell them to take it back so they don't have this problem.

Cracking around a door is absolutely not something that is common. I would guess that for the price estimated, we're not talking about the gasket, but the frame itself. If the cracking is very bad and harboring the use of the fridge, you may still consider investing the extra money in repair it. Some of these french door models are expensive enough that you'd still come out ahead. If the cracking is slight but still allowing moisture to enter the insulated area, I would suggest caulking it yourself; hopefully remedying the situation. One of the best forms of caulking you can use for such a cold climate is a product called 'Shoe Goo'. It isn't intended as caulking per say, and is normally found in the shoe department of any particular store. It dispenses as an extremely soft material, just slightly denser than that of glue. It will fill in the cracks and harden enough to protect the interior.

For what it's worth, this is why I harp on the consideration of warranty when making a larger purchase, especially one like a refrigerator. Too often consumers make these purchases with only an assumption that the product will last; unfortunately, they lack any actual guarantee of the same. When the product fails within a time period and in a way that the consumer doesn't expect, they are left with nothing more than complaints.

I've got quite a bit of back ground in appliances and I will easily state that the majority of the Whirlpool family of products are quite well built. There are those exceptions and, unfortunately, anything can potentially have problems down the road.

I currently own a Whirlpool family refrigerator and can't speak more highly of it.

Let us know what you end up doing. I'd love to hear back from you.
